The Case Against JaMarcus Russell and for Brady Quinn
During the 2006 football season, the conventional wisdom said Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn would be the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NFL draft. LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell was rarely mentioned as a Top 10 pick.
That is, until the Sugar Bowl. In the weeks leading up to that game, we started to see a shift in public opinion toward JaMarcus Russell, and when JaMarcus Russell's team trounced Brady Quinn's, JaMarcus Russell became the consensus prediction to go to the Raiders first overall. It's almost impossible to find anyone who favors Brady Quinn anymore.
One of the few who still prefers Brady Quinn is David Lewin, who writes a detailed account of why he thinks Brady Quinn projects as a better professional than JaMarcus Russell. Lewin says games started and completion percentage are the best indicators of a college quarterback's NFL success. His conclusion: "Brady Quinn is a much better quarterback prospect than JaMarcus Russell."
Whether you agree or not, at least it goes against the pattern of groupthink that too often takes hold around NFL draft time.
