Russell steps into new job with lots to learn
With the draft done, rookie camps over and mini-camps about to commence, the painstaking process of beginning a new season has begun in earnest for the NFL.
That much was sometimes shockingly clear last weekend to many of the league's newcomers, including top pick JaMarcus Russell.
The Oakland Raiders quarterback was asked when it truly hit him that he has a new job.
"When I first got out here," JaMarcus Russell said at the conclusion of a three-day rookie camp.
"Just seeing the different guys out here, Warren Sapp, Jerry Porter and the rest of the guys. Just getting a chance to go out there and be on the side of those guys and help make a difference is wonderful."
He had a few fumbled snaps and a few shaky throws but otherwise left his first pro excursion satisfied.
"The longer you practice, more you practice, the better you can be with each and every guy out there," JaMarcus Russell said.
Said Raiders coach Lane Kiffin of his top draft pick, "I wanted to see him come out here and just be able to handle the pressure of the whole new environment and playbook and a new huddle and getting in and out of the huddle."
"We weren't expecting great things right away, obviously, because there is so much thrown at him. We're pleased with where he's at, and as soon as we get him back here we've got a lot of work to do with him."
