Raiders notebook: Oakland signs DE Jarvis Moss

The Raiders on Wednesday signed defensive end Jarvis Moss in hopes of finally getting meaningful production from a first-round pick in 2007.
Moss, 26, was the 17th player chosen that season, taken by the Denver Broncos. He recorded 3½ sacks his first two seasons but none in 16 games the past two seasons. The Broncos released him last week.
The Raiders chose first overall in that same draft and whiffed on quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
"Being there for four years, seeing guys come and go, then when it's actually your number called and they're telling you they don't need you anymore, it was a weird feeling," Moss said before his first practice as a Raider. "I had a chance to sit back and reflect on everything for a few days."
During that time, Raiders managing general partner Al Davis was reflecting on past conversations with wide receiver Louis Murphy, a teammate of Moss' at the University of Florida.
"He told me (Davis) had asked about me several times," said Moss, who will wear No. 94. "It was all positive stuff, so that's good to know I'm wanted. "... "That just gives me more incentive to go to work and bust my tail wearing black."
Moss, 6-foot-7 and 257 pounds, played defensive end and linebacker for the Broncos. He was signed ostensibly as a replacement for end Trevor Scott, who suffered a season-ending knee injury Sunday against the Steelers.
Raiders coach Tom Cable said he liked what he saw from Moss

during his first practice.
"He has some pass-rush ability, that's pretty apparent," Cable said. "He's kind of a tall, lanky kid, with some NFL background, so we'll see how fast we can incorporate him" into the scheme.
The Raiders placed Scott on the injured-reserve list to make room for Moss on the 53-man roster.
Wide receiver Chaz Schilens (knee/foot) and cornerback Chris Johnson (groin) were the only two players held out of practice. Tight end Zach Miller (foot) and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (ankle) made it through most of practice without any setbacks.
Schilens practiced with his teammates Friday for the first time since he underwent left knee surgery midway through training camp. Now his left foot is giving him problems.
"The foot got sore again," Cable said. "So, we're kind of going back and forth between the two issues. "... "It is a bit of a setback. We'll just have to see how much and how long." Schilens hasn't played a regular-season game this year. He missed eight games last season because of a broken bone in his left foot that required two surgeries.
Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour issued the following statement regarding his open-handed blow to the face of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the second quarter of Sunday's game.
"I apologize to my teammates, fans and coach for my actions in (Sunday's) game," Seymour said. "This is an emotional game that sometimes triggers frustrated reactions when you are out on the field. I reacted in a way that was unprofessional to the game and not in line with the respect that goes along with wearing the NFL shield. For that, I apologize."
Seymour was ejected from the game. The league fined him $25,000.

NFL tries to forget JaMarcus Russell If you’re in New York for the draft this week and you happen to pass by the NFL’s store in Manhattan, look up. Will Denarius Moore Be the Oakland Raiders' Star Receiver in 2012? Fan Perspective Wide receiver Denarius Moore was certainly a stand-out on the 2011 Oakland Raiders' team, making a name for himself the moment he arrived to training camp last year. The rookie sensation was the best steal of the 2011 NFL draft, signed as a fifth round pick. It just goes to show a first round pick, such as former quarterback JaMarcus Russell, can turn out to be a huge disappointment, while some ...

Andrew Luck: Will He Become the Next Peyton Manning or JaMarcus Russell? Stanford’s Andrew Luck  will become the 18th quarterback taken with the first overall pick since 1970 in the NFL draft  on Thursday. The Indianapolis Colts  obviously hope that Luck can deliver wins and playoff victories in the same manner as the man he replaces, Peyton Manning, who was also the first overall pick in 1998. Based on the rookie year performance of the previous QBs who were the ...

2012 NFL Draft: Why Robert Griffin III's Selfish Attitude Will Doom His Career We've seen it happen to top prospective quarterbacks before as well as former Heisman Trophy winners, and that's a poor NFL career. Draft Preview: 5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers In the 2007 draft, the Oakland Raiders selected JaMarcus Russell with their first overall pick, mostly because they had to select JaMarcus Russell with their first overall pick. Or at least that was their foolish mindset, the same thinking that planted the seed for Lane Kiffin’s year of fun and frustration. But Oakland’s antics aside, [...]

The 3 Bad Decisions in the Draft’s First Round: A Fan’s Take With every draft, there are winners and losers. In the 2003 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected Charles Rogers second overall ahead of Andre Johnson. We all know how that worked out for the Lions. In 2007, the Oakland Raiders selected JaMarcus Russell, expecting a franchise, pro bowl quarterback. Instead, the Raiders got a lazy, unmotivated half a Big Mac.
