RECAP: Raiders vs Jaguars
The Oakland Raiders fell to the Jacksonville Jaguars 49-11 in 2007 NFL Regular Season Week 16 action. RB Dominic Rhodes carried the ball 27 times for 115 yards, and rookie QB Jamarcus Russell tossed his first career touchdown pass.
Oakland Raiders won the opening coin toss and elected to receive. CB Chris Carr returned K Josh Scobee's opening kickoff to the Oakland Raiders 13, where the Oakland Raiders offense took the field with .Josh McCown at quarterback. The Jaguars forced and three-and-out and Pro Bowl P Shane Lechler came on to punt. WR Dennis Northcutt called for and made a fair catch of the 46-yard punt at the Jaguars 33.
Jacksonville's offense opened with David Garrad at quarterback. After a 5-yard penalty on the Raiders for too many men on the field, RB Fred Taylor broke loose for a 62-yard touchdown run. Scobee's extra point gave the Jaguars a 7-0 lead with 12:02 left in the first quarter.
Carr returned the ensuing kickoff to the Oakland 15. The Oakland Raiders moved out to their 42 before the Jaguars forced a punt. Northcutt returned Lechler's second punt of the day two yards to the Jacksonville 16.
RB Maurice Jones-Drew capped off a 7-play, 84-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown burst. Scobee's extra point gave the Jaguars a 14-0 lead with 3:21 left in the first quarter.
Carr returned the ensuing kickoff 29 yards to the Raiders 37. The Raiders took over with rookie QB Jamarcus Russell at the controls. A few plays later, S Reggie Nelson picked off a Jamarcus Russell pass intended for rooki TE Zach Miller and fumbled the ball back to the Raiders. Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio challenged the ruling. The ruling on the field was upheld and the Raiders had a first down at the Jacksonville 25. K Sebastian Janikowski got the Raiders on the board with a 41-yard field goal that cut the Jaguars lead to 14-3 with 13:54 left in the second quarter.
CB Scott Starks returned the ensuing kickoff 10 yards to the Jaguars 16. The Jags moved out to their own 39 before the Raiders forced a punt. P Adam Podlesh's booming 57-yard punt was returned by rookie WR Johnnie Lee Higgins to the 7-yard line.
The Jaguars held the Raiders to a three-and-out. Starks took a reverse hand off and returned the 53-yard punt 56-yards to the 2-yard line. Garrad hit RB Greg Jones for a short touchdown pass. Scobee's extra point gave the Jaguars a 21-3 lead with 9:12 left in the second quarter.
Carr returned the ensuing kickoff to the Raiders 16. The Jaguars were offside on the kickoff and the Raiders elected a re-kick. This time, Carr returned the kickoff to the 27. The Raiders next drive ended when CB Terry Cousin intercepted a Jamarcus Russell pass and returned the pick to the Raiders 35.
A few plays later, Garrard scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. Scobee's extra point gave the Jags a 28-3 lead with 6:08 left in the second quarter.
Carr returned the ensuing kickoff 26 yards to the 28. A few plays later, Russell was shaken up and was replaced by McCown. The Raiders drove to the Jacksonville 20 but failed to convert a 4th and 4 and the Jags took over with 1:48 left in the second quarter.
In a bizarre sequence several plays later, four unsportsmanlike conduct penalties gave Jacksonville a first down at the Raiders 5-yard line. LB Kirk Morrison then picked off a Garrard pass at the goal line and returned it to the Oakland 35. A sack of McCown ended the first half.
Janikowski's opening kickoff sailed through the end zone for a touchback. The Raiders defense forced a three-and-out. Higgins fumbled the punt out of bounds and the Raiders took over at their own 37 with Russell at quarterback. The Raiders managed one first down before the Jaguars defense forced a punt. Lechler's punt was downed at the Jacksonville 5-yard line.
Garrard capped a 95-yard drive with a 37-yard touchdown pass to WR Matt Jones. Scobee's extra point gave the Jaguars a 35-3 lead with 6:16 left in the third quarter.
Carr returned the ensuing kickoff to the Oakland 27. The Raiders were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. After Lechler's punt, Quinn Gray entered the game at quarterback for Jacksonville. The Jaguars moved out to their own 37 before the Raiders forced a punt.
After Podlesh's 43-yard punt, the Raiders offense took over at their own 19. On the first play of the drive, Russell was picked off by S Jamaal Fudge. Jacksonville took over at the Raiders 29. Later in the drive, Gray found WR Reggie Williams for a 9-yard touchdown. Scobee's PAT put Jacksonville up 42-3 with 13:00 left in the fourth quarter.
The Jaguars held the Raiders to a three-and-out. The Jaguars were unable to mount a scoring drive and were forced to punt. The Jaguars got the ball back when they recovered a Russell fumble at the Oakland 14. Three plays later, Gray found TE Richard Angulo for a 7-yard TD pass. Scobee's PAT gave Jacksonville a 49-3 lead with 4:52 left in the game.
Russell and Rhodes engineered a scoring drive late in the game. Russell connected on a his first career touchdown pass to fellow rookie TE Zach Miller from two yards out. The TD toss capped a 12-play, 70-yard drive. The successful two-point conversion made the score 49-11 with six seconds left.
The Raiders fall to 4-11 on the season and return home to face the San Diego Chargers in the 2007 Regular Season finale at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland on Sunday, December 30.
